Role Overview:
The Pharmacy Assistant will be responsible for the collection and delivery of pharmaceutical items, products, and related documents within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct timely collections and deliveries between units and stores.
- Provide messenger and administrative support to the pharmacy.
Educational Requirements:
- Essential: Grade 10
- Desirable: No additional qualifications required.
Experience Requirements:
- Essential: No prior experience necessary.
- Desirable: 1 to 2 years of experience in or exposure to a private hospital setting.
Skills and Knowledge Needed:
- Understanding of pharmaceutical product storage conditions.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of cold chain policies.
- Ability to handle hazardous substances.

Job Purpose:
Provide a thorough, professional, and cost-effective pharmaceutical service to both in-hospital patients and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the availability of medicines and scheduled substances for both stores and the public.
- Dispense medications accurately.
- Maintain efficient stock levels of medicines and scheduled substances.
Required Education:
- Essential: B Pharm, B Sc Pharm, or Dip Pharm
- Desired: None
Required Experience:
- Essential: None
- Desired: 1-3 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy, including stock management and distribution.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Financial management
- Knowledge of ethical and surgical products
- Familiarity with relevant pharmacy legislation (e.g., Pharmacy Act, Good Pharmacy Practice, Medicine Control Act 101 of 1965)
- Clinical pharmacy and antimicrobial stewardship
- Understanding of medical aid benefits regulations and formularies
- Proficiency with pharmacy systems (e.g., UNISOLV, AS400)
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office)
- Ethical stock control practices
