Understanding the Military Skills Development System (MSDS)

The MSDS is a two-year contractual program designed to provide young South Africans with both military and functional training. Participants spend the first year undergoing basic military instruction followed by specialized functional training. In the second year, they are deployed to various units where they gain hands-on experience applying their acquired skills.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following standards to qualify for the MSDS 2026 intake:

  • Nationality: South African citizenship (dual citizenship not allowed).
  • Age Requirements:
    • 18 to 22 years (with a Grade 12 qualification).
    • 18 to 26 years (with a 3-year tertiary qualification or N6 certificate).
  • Educational Qualifications:
    • Completion of Grade 12.
    • Minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 17 (excluding Life Orientation).
  • Criminal Record: No prior convictions or pending legal cases.
  • Health Standards: Must meet the required medical fitness standards.
  • Tattoos: No visible tattoos on legs, lower arms, neck, or face.

Physical Requirements

  • Minimum Height and Weight:
    • Females: Height of at least 148 cm, weight of at least 48 kg.
    • Males: Height of at least 155 cm, weight of at least 52 kg.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI):
    • Females: Between 18.5 and 30.
    • Males: Between 19 and 30.

Selection and Screening Process

Applicants will undergo the following evaluations:

  • Drug screening
  • Psychometric and medical assessments
  • Criminal record checks
  • Qualification and background verification
