We welcome applications from eligible candidates who wish to engage in a Pharmacy Internship within the Gauteng Department of Health for the upcoming year. Please note that these positions are subject to approval for the 2024 intake.

Pharmaceutical Services in Gauteng Gauteng’s hospitals are categorized as Central, Tertiary, Regional, District, and Specialized Hospitals. Additionally, District Pharmacies play a vital role in primary healthcare services.

The pharmacist plays a crucial role in stock management, encompassing tasks such as medication ordering, storage, distribution, and maintaining control over medications.

Pharmacists also play a pivotal role in managing the formulary and assessing the influence of the Essential Medicines List (EML) on stock management and distribution.

Hospitals are typically segmented into these main care areas:

  • In-patient pharmacy: Dispensing medications to ward patients and overseeing stock levels in wards and specialized areas.
  • Out-patient pharmacy: Dispensing medication from bulk containers into patient-ready packs.
  • Patient Care areas: Collaborating with medical and nursing personnel during ward rounds to address medication-related concerns.

The Department offers 12-month internship positions at registered hospitals and district pharmacies, beginning from the date of registration with the SA Pharmacy Council.

Prospective candidates interested in the pharmacy internship programme within Gauteng’s public sector must complete and submit the following documents:

  • Application for Employment Form (Z83), available at Government Offices or online.
  • Current Curriculum Vitae (up to 4 pages).
  • Academic record up to the 3rd year of study or beyond.
  • Testimonial from a university lecturer.
  • Selection of six institutions (refer to the attached list below) in order of preference, including:
    • Two Regional Hospitals
    • One Central/Tertiary Hospital OR One Specialist Hospital
  • A motivation letter justifying your choices.
  • Copy of Identity Document or equivalent.

Please note that internship positions are limited to a 12-month period from the date of registration with the SA Pharmacy Council.

The Department reserves the right not to extend internships in cases of pre-registration exam failure. Extension requests will be considered individually.
