A Stepping Stone to a Career in Sales: The Assistant Sales Representative Learnership

Are you a young, unemployed South African with a passion for people and a knack for persuasion? A learnership program might be the perfect way to kickstart your career. Companies like Clover are offering exciting opportunities for individuals looking to gain real-world experience and develop valuable skills. The Assistant Sales Representative Learnership, for instance, provides a unique chance to get your foot in the door of a fast-paced and rewarding industry.

What is a Learnership?

A learnership is a work-based learning program that combines structured, theoretical training with practical on-the-job experience. It’s a fantastic way to bridge the gap between education and the workplace, allowing you to earn a qualification while you work. For young, unemployed individuals, a learnership can be a game-changer, providing not only a salary but also the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

This particular learnership, offered in partnership with the Youth Employment Service (YES) program, is specifically designed to empower young South Africans. It’s a 12-month commitment where you’ll be based at Clover’s Clayville office in Gauteng. This program is more than just a job; it’s an investment in your future, built on the principle of “TO BE BETTER FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL.”

Your Role as an Assistant Sales Representative

As an Assistant Sales Representative, you’ll be the face of the company, responsible for expanding the customer base and building strong relationships. This role is all about initiative, communication, and a drive to succeed. Your primary focus will be on customer recruitment and onboarding, specifically within the Food Service Industry (FSI) and General Trade (GT) channels. This means you’ll be actively seeking out new businesses—restaurants, cafes, small shops, and other outlets—and introducing them to the brand.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Growing the Customer Base: You’ll be tasked with sourcing new business and actively recruiting a set number of new customers each month. For the FSI channel, this goal is 125 customers, while for the GT channel, it’s 200. This is a challenging but achievable target that will push you to develop your sales skills.
  • Building Relationships: You will be the point of contact for new customers, ensuring they have a smooth onboarding experience. You’ll be answering their questions, keeping them informed about their account status, and making sure their needs are met. This role is all about providing excellent customer support from the very beginning.
  • Supporting the Sales Team: You won’t be working in isolation. You’ll be an important part of the sales team, working closely with Sales Representatives and Area Managers. You’ll manage the process of handing off new customers to the wider team and keep track of why some potential customers don’t sign up. This feedback is crucial for improving sales strategies.
  • Maintaining Standards: Beyond just getting new customers, you’ll also be responsible for ensuring they receive excellent service. This includes helping with sales procedures, monitoring stock levels, and ensuring that products are properly displayed.

Who They Are Looking For

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you need to meet some basic requirements and possess certain qualities. You must have a Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent NQF4 qualification, a valid Code 08 driver’s license, and be fluent in business English.

Beyond the formal requirements, the company is looking for a specific type of person. They want someone who is:

  • Proactive and Resilient: You need to be a self-starter who takes initiative and doesn’t give up easily. The world of sales can be challenging, so you must be determined, flexible, and able to bounce back from setbacks.
  • Honest and Effective: Integrity is key. You should act with honesty and consistency in all your dealings. You also need to be committed and motivated to achieve results effectively.
  • Customer-Focused: A big part of this role is building rapport and trust. You must be customer-orientated, with strong interpersonal skills and a desire to provide great service.
  • A Great Communicator: You’ll need to communicate effectively, negotiate well, and have the ability to plan and organize your work efficiently.

This learnership is a fantastic opportunity to develop these skills and many more. It’s a chance to gain valuable experience, build a professional network, and set yourself up for a successful career in sales.
